Exploring Kailua-Kona

Reclining on the sunny, sandy, and volcanic west coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, picturesque Kailua-Kona was once the land of Hawaiian kings. Now a quintessential holiday hotspot known for its rich history and rich coffee, the seaport city is the perfect blend of leisure and pleasure. Here you can surf warm waves, explore vibrant corals, or be pampered as if you were royalty yourself. At the end of the day, kick back on a beach and wash the sunset down with a cup of fruity shaved ice.

Things to see

A trip to Kailua-Kona simply wouldn’t be complete without a few indulgent hours on the beach. With its soft white sand, shimmering aquamarine water and gently swaying coconut palms, Magic Sands Beach is a Hawaiian cliché for all the right reasons. Popular with the surfers, it’s a particularly trendy hang out. Otherwise known as Maniniowali Beach, Kua Bay is a little more peaceful. Worth the short drive to get there, the clear water and immaculate sand ticks all the beach boxes. If you’re a snorkeler, the best place to don your flippers is Kahalu'u Beach Park, a small sheltered cove. With its calm shallow water, corals and a huge variety of ‘tame’ fish, expect to see the likes of sea turtles and colorful parrot fish. Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park connects you to Native Hawaiian heritage in picturesque style. The coastal park offers hiking and wildlife watching, along with visits to heiau – sacred Hawaiian temples.

Hotels in Kailua-Kona

Whatever your taste, needs, or budget, there’s a healthy choice of hotels in Kailua-Kona to choose from, many of which sit right on the beachfront. From secluded honeymoon retreats to full service accommodation wrapped in glamorous gardens, there’s a parcel of paradise for everyone. In the luxury digs you’ll find every amenity under the sun. Expect fully kitted out spas, lagoon like swimming pools, pristine golf courses, and tennis courts. The midrange hotels in Kailua-Kona don’t disappoint either. The plusher rooms spare none of the creature comforts, with balconies, terraces and a whole host of deluxe extras the more you pay.

Where to stay

Many of the more upmarket hotels in Kailua-Kona are slightly out of the center, affording guests a little more seclusion. Plenty of mid-range options however can be found along the city’s palm lined and walkable epicenter, Ali’I Drive. Home to the tantalizing “restaurant row”, you’ll also find some of the town’s best shopping haunts here. From boutiques and malls to marketplaces, favorites include the Keauhou Shopping Center and the Coconut Grove Marketplace. Whilst you’re in town be sure to grab some 100% Pure Kona Coffee to take home – it’s regarded as one of the finest coffees in the world.

How to get to Kailua-Kona

The city’s nearest airport is Kona International Airport (KOA) at Keahole, otherwise known as Keahole Airport. Whilst it serves a good handful of destinations, those coming from further afield may need a connecting flight. Interisland flights from the much better connected Honolulu International Airport are possible. Once you’ve landed at Keahole Airport it’s just an 11 mile journey into Kailua-Kona. Since public transport between the 2 is limited, you’re best off hiring a car or just hopping in a taxi – both of which are available at the airport. Hiring a car is particularly popular with visitors, as it allows you to get out and explore at your own pace.
