Detroit Hotels

A city beating with an energy you won’t find elsewhere, Detroit is ever on the rise. The birthplace of the Motown sound and America’s automotive industry, Motor City has veered from its image of urban decay into a restored and revitalized metropolis. Culture junkies flock to the museums, galleries, and theaters, sports fans make a pilgrimage for the games, whilst foodies and trendsetters crave Detroit’s cosmopolitan dining and nightlife scenes. A blend of antiquated grandeur, trendy neglected edges, and gleaming modernity, ‘The D’ is a city with an unmistakable identity.

Things to see

Home to one of the most important art collections in the United States, the Detroit Institute of Arts displays over 60,000 pieces within its Beaux Arts building. From classic to contemporary and American to African, the eclectic collection includes masterpieces from the likes of Degas and Cézanne. The low-key Motown Historical Museum is must visit for any music fan. Along with a trove of starry memorabilia, including one of Michael Jackson’s iconic gloves, the museum’s biggest attraction is the legendary Studio A – where a who’s who of Motown stars recorded the hits that defined an era. Greektown Historic District is one of Detroit’s most spirited neighborhoods. A blend of Grecian flair and western revelry, the luminous stretch is home to Greek restaurants, buzzing bars, and neon-lit casinos – making it a popular nighttime haunt. Baseball fans will want to make a pitch for Comerica Park, the open-air home of the famous Detroit Tigers.

Hotels in Detroit

Whatever your pocket and preference, there’s a vast selection of hotels in Detroit to take your pick from. Cool and contemporary downtown digs boast floor-to-ceiling cityscapes, historical hotels come complete with prim and poised charm, whilst casino cribs exist in ritzy style. Those paying a little extra can expect an array of amenities and cosmopolitan in-room extras, including flat-screen televisions and high speed internet access, along with minibars and iPod docks. Whilst the cheaper hotels in Detroit are in pretty good supply, those looking to spend even less will find lots of budget name favorites further out in the metropolitan area.

Where to stay

A hotel in Detroit’s buzzing downtown district puts you at the high rise heart of the city. Amongst the mish mash of late 19th century architecture and shiny modern marvels, you’ll find some of Detroit’s best shops and restaurants and cultural offerings – including the second-largest theater district in the US. Midtown is considered to be the real cultural epicenter however. Here you’ll find a barrage of museums and galleries, including the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Historical Museum. Those on a budget should consider basing themselves in Dearborn or Troy. Dearborn is home to the Henry Ford Museum, whilst Troy boasts the glamorous Somerset Collection Mall.

How to get to Detroit

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is the main gateway into Detroit, situated a convenient 20 minute drive away from the downtown district. It’s a particularly well connected airport, with flights to most major destinations in the United States, as well as a handful of direct connections between Europe and East Asia. Once you’ve landed the most efficient way to get into downtown is via a taxi, which costs around $45 dollars. The city is also reachable via the Greyhound bus and the Amtrak railway service. Buses terminate at Howard Street near to downtown, whilst Amtrak’s Wolverine service stops at the station in Detroit’s New Center area.
