Harare Hotels

Glass-fronted skyscrapers gleam under a bright sun and street markets occupy shaded spots beneath a purple haze of jacaranda trees. The rich, red earth reminds you that you’re in the heartland of Africa, but in other ways, Harare defies expectations completely. There’s a real sense of energy and development in Zimbabwe’s capital, with European-style café culture and American-inspired shopping malls springing up all over the place. With its many festivals and growing international tourism, Harare is quickly becoming a cosmopolitan destination.

Things to see

With the high-rise skyline of Harare’s downtown in the background, Africa Unity Square is a symbolic centre point of the city. Laden with jacaranda trees, which bloom purple in the summer, it’s an enchanting place on quiet days, when you can find a spot by a fountain beat the urban heat. It’s also regularly the site of festivals and demonstrations, when it beats with drums and music. Just to the north, you’ll find the National Art Gallery, on the edge of Harare Gardens. This innovative, contemporary space showcases the best national art, from ancient sculpture to modern paintings of Harare street scenes. In need of some retail therapy? Head to Sam Levy’s Village, in the north of the city. This upmarket shopping area features designer outlets and one-off boutiques where you can splash some cash. Afterwards, you can hit one of the spas, salons or bars for some well-deserved relaxation.

Hotels in Harare

Boasting a stylish collection of 5-star resorts and smart business hotels, Harare hotels provide good value for money. Most of the mid-range hotels have a wealth of facilities, including leisure amenities like swimming pools and saunas. There are also business centres and computer stations for those who are visiting for work, as well as free WiFi in the rooms. The luxury hotels in Harare offer generous, richly-furnished suites, with elegant sitting areas. Modern conveniences, like minibars and premium TV channels, are provided. When you need some pampering, you can head to the onsite spa, or unwind in the hotel bar.

Where to stay

Whether you’re visiting Harare for business or pleasure, the central district offers the best of capital city life. You’ll be close to many of the cultural attractions, within walking distance of African Unity Square and the museums. There are also dozens of restaurants, bars and clubs within a small and easily navigable area. If you’re looking for a cheap hotel in Harare, the Eastern district of the city is the best bet, with its good value guesthouses and budget hotels. For an upmarket, boutique hotel in a calm location, head to North Harare, where you’ll be close to Sam Levy’s Village.

How to get to Harare

Harare International Airport is the country’s largest, with connections all across Africa. Visitors coming from further afield will need to connect in one of the major hubs, like Nairobi or Johannesburg. The airport is located just 15 kilometres from the city centre, so it’s a speedy 20 minutes to get in by car. Several of the hotels offer airport shuttle services, which can take the hassle out of your journey. Otherwise, you can take an official taxi from the terminal, or hire a car. If self-driving, be aware that Harare’s roads can be somewhat chaotic with traffic, pedestrians, and potholes.
