Find out more about Boracay Island

Exploring Boracay

Boracay is an island in the central region of the Philippines with long stretches of fine, white sand beaches and clear, turquoise waters. Originally home of the native Ati people, Boracay first saw tourists in the 1970s, about the same time as the release of the British-American movie Too Late the Hero, the bulk of which was shot here. The rest of the decade up until the ‘80s saw independent travellers and backpackers arrive. Rapid development on the island eventually took place and by the ‘90s, Boracay was posed as the top beach destination in a country known for its beaches. It remains so today.

Sights nearby

Boracay is the premier island destination in the Philippines. Naturally, it's the beaches and the sea that are the main attractions of the island. Hotels here range from cheap, beachfront properties to high-end, luxury accommodation such as the Shangri-La's Boracay Resort and Spa.

White Beach
Practically the entire coastline of the island is lined with beaches. The most popular of the beaches is White Beach, a long stretch on the western coast of Boracay which is considered the center of everything on the island. The beach is divided into three areas, or stations. The northernmost area, Station 1, has the nicest, and thus priciest, beachfront accommodation, such as those in Fridays Boracay Resort. Station 2 is the busiest area and considered the island’s shopping, dining, and partying hub. Station 3, the least busy area, is perfect for those looking for cheap hotels.

Alternative beaches
There are a number of other smaller beaches and coves around the island. Those looking to escape the chaos of White Beach can head to Puka Beach in the north. The sand is a bit rougher here but this is a much quieter area with fewer establishments. Balinghai Beach, north of White Beach, is a good place to find peace and quiet, too. The views from the restaurant on top of the cliff here are a plus. Thrill-seekers who want to do kite boarding and other water-related sports can head to Bulabog Beach, which is popular for these types of activities, especially on windy days.

Water sports
Practically all types of water sports can be done in Boracay. Diving is probably the number one water activity as various types of marine creatures, such as sharks and stingrays, can be seen around these parts. White Beach has several dive centers which can arrange dives for tourists. Depths of dive sites range from 33 feet to 82 feet. Parasailing is also popular, especially at dusk, and allows visitors to take in the splendid sunset views of Boracay. Boating, kayaking, snorkelling, and windsurfing can also be done.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Because of its popularity, Boracay is home to a wide range of restaurants catering to all budgets. Delis, bakeries, cafés, open-grill restaurants, steakhouses, and fast food are available. Nightlife is noteworthy, too, as many local and foreign tourists alike specifically come to Boracay to party on the beach. White Beach is the place to be at night as this is where many bars are located. Additionally, the area is host to events such as concerts, sporting tournaments, bikini contests, and many other proceedings. Charles Bar has live music performances, while Bom Bom Bar is a popular hangout for both musicians and artists. Cocomangas is frequented by young people for its lively party scene. The shopping, eating, and drinking centre of Boracay is White Beach. Clothing boutiques, gift shops, and all sorts of stores selling everything you may need for your vacation and more can be found along the main strip here.

Public transport

With the rise of local budget carriers in the country and Boracay’s location only an hour’s flight from Manila, it is easy to understand why this beautiful tropical destination has become popular. Not one but two airports serve as the island’s main gateway. The larger Kalibo International Airport receives flights from many national hubs as well as from China, Taiwan, and South Korea. The smaller and nearer Godofredo P. Ramos Airport receives flights from Manila and Cebu. Both airports are located on Panay Island, a larger island only two kilometres south of Boracay. Land and ferry connections to Boracay are available from each of these gateways.
