Where to stay in Ooty

Ooty Hotels

High in the Nilgiris, or Blue Mountains, Ooty is known as the Queen of the Hill Stations, and not without reason. Benefitting from mild temperatures and a subtropical landscape, Ooty is a fairytale land of sculpted tea plantations, waterfalls and mist-laden forests, which fragrance the air with pine and eucalyptus. It’s no wonder that Ooty is a popular weekend escape from India’s southern cities, and people chug up on the old steam-powered train to enjoy this cool, calm mountain resort.

Things to see

An attractive and festive town, Ooty is renowned for its beautiful gardens. Set against a backdrop of dusky Blue Mountains, the Botanical Gardens are a riot of colour and lush vegetation, as you might expect to find in India, but there’s also more than a touch of the English Country Garden feel – unsurprising as they were created by the British Marquis of Tweedale in the Victorian era. For more floral delights, visit the Rose Garden on the other side of town. There are creative topiary sculptures as well as enchantingly pretty rose beds, which release sweet perfumes. To ramp up the romance even further, why not take a boat trip on beautiful Ooty Lake? Surrounded by slender eucalyptus trees, the air is fragrantly cool and pleasant, and the water blue and clear. There’s only one way to complete such a whimsical day: by tasting Ooty’s gourmet chocolates, renowned throughout India.
