Find out more about Gulshan

Exploring Gulshan

Gulshan is a glitzy, upper-end neighbourhood in Dhaka, a relatively affluent area where many foreign businesses, cell phone companies, embassies and expats are based. It is more laidback than the more tourist-oriented city centre and Old Dhaka areas, though is home to a decent spread of hotels, shopping malls, restaurants and bars. In addition, Gulshan is close to the airport near where there are many good hotels, like the Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel Dhaka, and is a better alternative for families visiting Dhaka for easier transfers.

Gulshan is mainly a commercial centre, though it does come with an inordinate number of mosques to take in. Two of the most prominent are the Banani Bazaar Mosque and the Gulshan Azad Mosque. There are also many churches in this area and one or two semi-interesting parks—the Gulshan Ladies Park coming complete with a lake and jogging track. Shopping is Gulshan’s biggest draw, however, with dozens of boutiques, along with many bazaars. For air-conditioned comfort, the likes of Pink City, Shopper's World or the ABC Shopping Mall are ideal.

Sights nearby

Gulshan is not blessed with sightseeing options and you’ll have to head out a bit and explore. The Mirpur area to the west is one of the best bets, home to the National Botanical Gardens and a zoo.

National Botanical Gardens
Located in the Mirpur area to the west of Gulshan is this veritable paradise amid bustling Dhaka. The 200-plus acre gardens—also known as the Bangladesh National Herbarium—is the country’s main centre of conservation and a star attraction here. On site are well over 50,000 trees, shrubs, herbs and aquatic plants, to include many exotic items. There’s also a massive rose garden here, along with a lake, water fall and bridge and it is visited by migratory birds in winter.

Kurmitola Golf Club
The Kurmitola Golf Club is a top sporting attraction in this area, an architect-designed set-up featuring lush fairways and greens. There is plenty of tree cover here, too, along with water features and sand. The 18-hole course is open to non-members and also comes with a driving range, pro shop, changing rooms, billiards, swimming pool and restaurants.

National Museum of Science and Technology
Off to the west in the Agargaon area of town is this fun and modern learning centre with static and working exhibits. It is split into three sections—technology, biological and physical science—through all sorts of inventions and experiments, such as energy, light electric, magnetism, sound, force, and so on. The history of space flight is also documented, along with more mundane things such as the study of minerals.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Gulshan is one of the top areas for entertainment in the city, with some pretty good eating out at trendy restaurants and a glut of Westernised fast food places. The upper area around Gulshan North Avenue tends to offer the most fun, with pizza and coffee shops, while the likes of the Dhaka Regency Hotel and Resort has top eating. Gulshan is also noted for its bars and expat-oriented clubs, though many of these will require membership. Pink pearls can be had in the handicraft and jewellery stores here.

Public transport

Gulshan is quite straightforward to get about, since it’s a smaller area on a grid pattern, with three main avenues served by frequent buses. Cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws can provide more localised transport, though meter taxis are more popular in this area than in Old Dhaka and they group up around the shopping malls. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is close by and best served by taxi.
