Exploring Zermatt

One of the world's most legendary mountain peaks, the Matterhorn, towers over the Swiss Alpine village of Zermatt in the canton of Valais. This former farming community became a popular tourist destination after the first attempt at climbing the Matterhorn ended with only three survivors in 1865. Today, tourism is Zermatt's most important industry. Nearly half of the village's approximately 5,800 permanent residents work in restaurants or hotels.

Zermatt may boast more than 125 hotels and 2,700 apartments, but most of them do not come cheap. Camping, hostels, and timeshares are the most affordable options of all. Guests can ski in and out of the three-star Hotel Hemizeus, among the most affordable mid-range accommodation options. Those able to afford the ultimate lap of luxury can enjoy stunning mountain views from the rooftop terrace of the five-star CERVO Mountain Boutique Resort.

Sights nearby

Visitors should leave their fear of heights at home before coming to Zermatt, whose main attractions include Europe's highest cable car station, the steep Gorner Gorge, and towering Alpine peaks as far as the eye can see.

Glacier Palace
No other cable car station in Europe stands at a higher altitude than the gondola which transports adventurous visitors to the continent's highest sightseeing platform, from which the Swiss, French, and Italian Alps can all be seen. Beneath the glacier's surface lies the Glacier Palace, a breathtaking winter wonderland filled with ice sculptures, an ice slide, and even an ice snack bar.

Gornerschlucht
The trek across the Gorner Gorge 15 minutes outside of Zermatt is not for the faint of heart no matter how visitors choose to make the journey. The most courageous trekkers of all can cross the gorge's lower part using an installation dating back to the late 19th century with no special equipment, but a mountain guide can also accompany visitors on the three- to four-hour excursion across the gorge's upper part. Trekkers can feel the gorge surging around them regardless of which route they select.

Matterhorn Museum
The rope that broke during the first Matterhorn climbing expedition, which only three people survived in 1865, is the most famous exhibit on display at this museum situated beneath a glass dome at a former casino. The local church stands next to this underground museum which traces Zermatt's history from its beginnings as a humble farm town to the world-class skiing destination it has become today.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Zermatt may contain more gourmet restaurants, fun nightclubs, and luxury shopping than any other village of its size on Earth. Diners who've had their fill of fondue and raclette can enjoy Asian, Italian and vegetarian cuisine. The car-free main street transforms into a lively outdoor dance floor after dark, but shopping is the most popular pastime during the day. Most shops sell ski equipment, designer clothing, miniature Matterhorn chocolates, and the latest in Swiss watches.

Public transport

Motorists who try to drive their vehicles into the car-free village of Zermatt are slapped with heavy fines. Therefore, trains and local taxis are the easiest ways to travel into Zermatt before checking into hotels like the three-star Hotel Alpenroyal. Many Zermatt hotels have their own electric car or even horse-drawn carriage services. Shuttle trains leave from the Matterhorn Terminal Tasch every 20 minutes, and Air Zermatt flights travel between many major airports. Aside from walking, the main way to travel around Zermatt is via the solar or electric powered buses which stop at every ski station. The Gornergrat Railway offers a leisurely journey to Mount Gornergrat's summit.
