Exploring Zhuhai

Zhuhai is a Special Economic Zone city in Guangdong Province of the Chinese south and is a popular alternative, or launch point, into Hong Kong or Macau. The ‘Pearl Sea’ city is clean and beautiful, having loads of parks and hilly scenery along with a nice stretch of coastline with palms and sand. Many Hong Kongers head over here for its excessive nightlife and cheaper prices (including the women)—or indeed make a daytrip from Macau—and its profusion of midrange and upper end hotels.

The city has won a number of liveability awards over the years and has a low population density as well as clean streets and well ordered residential districts. Most apparent is its wide open spaces and parks, with more greenery here than most concrete-clad Chinese cities. There are also major thoroughfares with excellent shopping and eating, along with ’eat streets’, ‘bar streets’ and a number of attractions that you wouldn’t see in either Macau or Hong Kong.

Sights nearby

There are several worthy sights to see within reach of Zhuhai hotels, including great swathes of parklands, a fine stretch of coast and the odd Buddhist temple. Zhuhai’s answer of the Yuanming Palace is a top draw.

New Yuanming Palace
A top sight away from the centre of the busy town is this mock up of Beijing’s famous Yuanming Palace, complete with large lake and mountain backdrop. Big Shilin Mountain sits behind and, along with the fine house and attractive gardens, is the draw of the park. Visitors can rent a boat and take in the lake, see pavilions and eat at restaurants. Close by is the three-star Starway Hotel Dijing Zhuhai and it’s easy to get to by bus from town.

Jintai Buddhist Temple
Across the river and into Doumen is Jintai Temple, one of the most impressive Buddhist temples in the region, with its red pillars and tiered roofs. It hails from the time of the Song Dynasty, making it more than 1,000 years old, and is certainly worthy of a visit as the area is very scenic. Bus #609 runs in regularly from Xiangzhou Station, though you’ll also need to get on a rickshaw.

Seashore Park and Fisher Girl
Located at the head of Zhuhai away from the bustle of the town is this pleasurable park overlooking the coast. The beach here is okay and the park good for strolling and cycling, though it gets busy on public holidays. Be sure to check out the massive granite sculpture of the Fisher Girl, the symbol of Zhuhai, with her necklace and mighty pearl. Farther back is the expansive Jingshan Park.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Gongbei district in the centre of the city is the place to head for eating. Yingbin Road goes right through this area and up through the city and has a number of shopping complexes, such as the Underground Shopping Complex which is good for everything from jade jewellery to handicrafts and clothes. Cantonese cuisine is all around while Wanzai’s Seafood Street is good for seafood. Zhuhai also has Walking Street and Bar Street for drinks, with the four-star Catic and Holiday Inn both good for entertainment also.

Public transport

Zhuhai is big and has mountains and parks throughout the city, making getting about a bit of a hassle. Buses are best taken between the main districts and are cheap, frequent and air–conditioned. Bus #10 takes in the main districts, including Gongbei (near the Macau border), Jinding and Xiangzhou. There are also sightseeing buses and taxis.
