Srinagar Hotels

Srinagar is a large, bustling city set in India’s Jammu and Kashmir state. Nestled deep within the bright green slopes and meandering rivers of the Kashmir Valley, Srinaga sings with authentic Indian culture, from old-world market boats that bob along the Jhelum river - selling Kashmiri clothing and exotic dried fruits - to copper-coloured temples and flower-washed, incense-soaked shrines. The sleek modern centre also bursts with museums and arts centres, only adding to Srinaga’s rich cultural heritage.

Things to see

Start your sun-dappled Srinaga morning by paying a visit to the city’s many temples and shrines. Begin at the Hazratbal Shrine - the city’s only domed mosque - which punctures the blue skyline with its bright white minarets. Situated on the bank of the reflective Dal Lake, the Hazratbal Shrine proffers from a tranquil setting, accentuated by its vast well-maintained gardens. After, climb the forest-blanketed Hari Parbat hill, which overlooks Srinaga, and visit the fort and shrine that sits atop it. The amber walls of the war-battered 18th century Durrani Fort twist and turn through fountain-clad gardens and courtyards, leading to a peaceful footpath that takes you to Hamza Makhdum, a vast green and white-walled 15th century shrine. As the afternoon rolls on, head back to Dal Lake, and take in the awe-inspiring sight of hundreds of multi-coloured wooden market boats selling beautiful wares.

How to get to Srinagar

Srinaga is served by a small centrally located airport. While Srinaga Airport offers some international flights, they are limited and infrequent. If arriving by plane, fly to Delhi International Airport - which provides regular year-round flights to top destinations across the globe, including Paris and London Heathrow - and catch a connecting plane, which will whizz you to Srinaga in under 2 hours. From the airport, catch a cheap taxi to the city centre. Public transport in the centre is limited, but taxis are surprisingly affordable. Alternatively, you can rent your own car.
