Where to stay in Aurangabad

Aurangabad Hotels

The Indian state of Maharashta is hardly lacking in culturally rich cities, counting Mumbai and Pune amongst its big hitters, but in many ways, fast-growing Aurangabad outdoes them. It’s known as the City of Gates with good reason: there are over 50 of them encircling the city, and it is the entrance to the Ajanta and Ellora caves, UNESCO World Heritage sites. Completing its cultural prowess are imposing hill forts, intricate Islamic architecture and a twin of the Taj Mahal.

Things to see

Whichever way you come into Aurangabad, you’re sure to be greeted by at least 1 of its many gates. These impressive structures, many flanked with octagonal towers, are a sign of Aurangabad’s prosperous and powerful past. Once you’re through the gates, you’ll be cast into the frenzy of the city centre, where food carts sizzle with fragrant biryani, and vendors show off lustrous Himroo shawls. One of the key attractions here is the Bibi Ka Maqbara, a temple which will have you wondering if you’ve mistakenly ended up in Agra, because it is a surreally exact replica of the Taj Mahal. It has the same series of white, domed pillars, the same calm channel of water providing a mirror-like reflection. Outside of the city lie the ancient cave sites of Ajanta and Ellora. These wondrous rock-hewn temples represent Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, 3 ancient faiths which existed here in harmony.
