About this cottage

Location, location, location! The 'Verdie May House' is an adorable 1930's cottage located in the heart of Lewisburg's Historical District - only a short 5 minute stroll to restaurants, cafes and shopping. Enjoy exploring the historical sites or relaxing on the spacious porch with a cool drink. This newly renovated home is the perfect place to enjoy Lewisburg!

This cosy 1930's cottage offers the opportunity to step back in time and immerse yourself in Lewisburg's roaring 30's (but with modern comforts!). This freshly renovated cottage has an amazing history - it was home to several local identities (including Eileen Kramer, an Australian National Treasure dancer and acclaimed local furniture maker Ozzi May and his wife, Verdie). The cottage is our favorite place for hanging out with family and friends - particularly as we can walk everywhere (and leave the car at home)!. We love using the cottage as a base for exploring Lewisburg and know you will too! It's the perfect 'home away from home'!

The house is small (great for 1-4 people) and has a spacious, well equipped kitchen (with new appliances), comfortable living area, study area with large desk, two comfortable bedrooms (with luxury Australian cotton linens) , separate laundry, a cute upstairs bathroom (with a clawfoot bathtub) and wonderful new large downstairs bathroom (featuring a shower with Bluetooth speaker connection for music and plush towels).

Original artwork and crafts by local artists, (including my Dad, Ronald Refsland), is found throughout the house.

The large covered porch is perfect for relaxing anytime of the day (even when it rains), people watching or for outdoor dining. You will enjoy views of Old Stone Church and the cemetery (directly across the street), Carnegie Hall and other historical sites. We have beautiful and comfortable outdoor furniture, including an antique iron outdoor dining table. In summer flowers burst out around the porch.

The large patio (using original stone and local river rocks custom designed by a local artisan) behind the house is a more private space - with the original outdoor fireplace available for BBQ's or making s'mores. We also have a smoker for more adventurous cooks.

The large front yard is perfect for playing a friendly (or competitive!) game of Molkky or croquet (we have the games for you),

The queen bed and two twin beds have brand new quality mattresses with 100% cotton Australian linens and duvets and fluffy pillows. The towels are 100% cotton. We are particular about dust and cleanliness as our daughter has allergies.

The city water is perfect drinking water.

If you would like some tasty food waiting in the cottage for you on arrival or during your stay, my sister in law, Beth, has a bakery business (Fresh Flours – at the local Farmers Market). For my guests, she will take phone/email orders and deliver directly to the cottage. She does amazing quiche, granola and pies (about 20 different kinds – all fantastic!). If you are interested, drop her an email at beth@freshflours.com (she lives about 2 minutes away from the cottage) and she can email the menu. I know what it is like travelling and sometimes it is nice to have an easy (and delicious) local options waiting when you arrive (or during your visit).

The Verdie May Cottage is the perfect 'home away from home' to enjoy your stay in Lewisburg! Come and enjoy!

Friends get out of town trip

The property was lovely, very clean, wonderful large porch to sit and chat with each other. The kitchen was great (appliances were apartments size, but worked for us). The bathrooms were adorable and helpful to have one on each floor. We used the outdoor fireplace one night and enjoyed the evening air. I think our favorite part was the covered porch. Our only slight negative is the living room chairs were a little hard to sit on to watch a movie on the convenient TV. Two recliners would be a huge plus. It was a short walk to downtown with cute shops to check out. Really enjoyed our short stay (3 nights).

    Practically Perfect in Every Way!

We loved this cozy home! Clean, comfortable and absolutely charming down to the last detail! This Owner has spared no expense in updating this classic! Steps away from downtown and minutes away from all area attractions! Thinking of the Greenbrier for your next visit here? Try the Verdie Mae House instead, you wont be disappointed! (Minus the room service of course) We would most definitely stay here again!!

    Great

We - a well traveled couple - stayed in this cute little cottage for 5 days. It has everything one needs and wants in a vacation accommodation. Punches way above its weight for a small cottage. Gives any upmarket, big city two room apartment a run for its money. The 1930 “Verdie May” house has a 2018 spirit in terms of functionality and creature comforts. It's as good as home with every conceivable appliance and household items one finds in Bed, Bath and Beyond. The owner thought of everything to meet guest needs. We were delighted to find, for our use, two wonderful bathrobes, items we did not bring along to cut down on luggage. Great value for money. Book it before we buy it for our vacation home in the coolest small town USA.

    Charming house in Historic Lewisburg

The house was as described, although a bit smaller inside than we realized, but perfect for our family of 4 (2 teenaged daughters). The location was perfect to walk in to town. We only used our car when we went to the Greenbriar and to Beckley. We made dinner one night and enjoyed breakfast in the kitchen every morning. We would definitely stay again if we ever find ourselves in Lewisburg.

    Small but convenient

Loved the bathroom and kitchen! Loved the cleanliness and convenience. Downsides were things we could deal with. However, all we wanted to do was be lazy and cuddle which there was not proper space to do with the love seat in the living room. Our suggestion is to remove the desk in the living room, get a bigger TV and rearrange living room to accommodate a full size couch, at least. Also a covering on the door by the bathroom would have been great. We really enjoyed our time. Nice quite area.

    Another Great Trip To Lewisburg

We had a wonderful weekend in Lewisburg and at this lovely home. It was our second stay and we hope to stay here each time we go to Lewisburg. The home is lovely and has well-appointed; comfortable and homey. It also has an amazing covered wrap around porch which is where we spent a lot of time. It was so refreshing and relaxing. We could not have been happier. The house is in a lovely neighborhood at the edge of downtown and is an easy walk to all the downtown restaurants and shopping. Can't wait to stay here again.

    Adorable cottage!!

We loved this little cottage within walking distance to Lewisburg! It was so quaint and clean and adorable! We are so thankful for the first aid kit that was in the house as my husband was working on his mother’s house and had a small injury! We will definitely rent this beautiful home again!
