Parks & playgrounds
The territory of Lake Como holds numerous protected areas of great value where it is possible to admire not only beautiful natural habitats that will leave you breathless, but also historical and archaeological sites which have characterized the history of the Lecco and Como area
If your children want to play, run around and have fun, don’t worry! Most villages on Lake Como (for example Bellagio, Menaggio and Cernobbio) have at least one playground with swings, slides, merry-go-rounds and green spaces where your kids can run and play together.
While your kids have fun, you can relax and enjoy the lake’s breathtaking views.
You may like to try the Greenway walk along the shores the Lake.
My six mile walk along it from Colonno to Cadenabbia takes me to the site of an historical event. A cross marks the spot where the wartime partisan leader Walter Audisio executed Benito Mussolini and his lover Claretta Petacci as they were trying to flee to Switzerland.
It is a black cross with a simple inscription: "Benito Mussolini 28 Aprile 1945" by the gates of a villa in the village of Mezzegra. On the other side of the black gates there are framed portraits of the fascist leader in typical bulldog pose, and Petacci looking elegant and pensive.
It is not a big tourist attraction. There are no signs indicating where it is, and security cameras record those who find it.
A more appealing attraction is the splendid Villa del Balbianello, perched on a headland at Lenno, where the Greenway joins the lake shore. Left to the nation by the explorer Guido Monzino, the first Italian to climb Everest, its romantic gardens are a big draw for bridal parties and film makers.
The shores of Lake Como are studded with beaches and resorts, where both locals and tourists find some relaxation on the hottest days. Here you will find a list of Lake Como’s best beaches, subdivided by area (Como branch, Lecco branch, Colico branch). This way, you will have the opportunity to choose the beach that is most convenient for you.
