Profile: Union Square

Profile: Union Square

Union Square has an upmarket, European feel, with well-heeled shoppers drifting through monolithic department stores and luxury boutiques in one of the world’s foremost shopping districts. Prada, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton all do a smashing business here. Many of the restaurants offer open-air dining and eclectic, world-spanning menus, running the gamut from Californian-Indian fusion dishes prepared by a Michelin-starred chef, to Italian-style pizzas enjoyed around communal tables.

In the winter, the square’s a popular spot with native Californians who make a pilgrimage to see the giant Christmas tree and outdoor ice skating rink. Union Square’s theater district is also worth a journey, as it’s home to the famed American Conservatory Theater.

    Great service and location

This hotel was the perfect way to end a long trip. The location was great — literally half a block from one of the cable car lines, great bubble tea/roll ice cream a block away, Morton’s is next door, and shops are a block away. The customer service was phenomenal, and beats staying at any of the larger chain hotels that are within the block. The front desk recognized us when we returned (can’t recall the last time that happened and I travel often), and clearly answered all of our questions. Our room didn’t have an a/c and faced another building, but it was quiet. When I opened the window, the breeze was perfect. Really no need for the a/c. I also used the ceiling fan and refrigerator. The bed was comfortable. Another good surprise was the shampoo and conditioner offered by the hotel. I was running low and tried them, and these were some of the best. I hope they keep using the same packaging and the content! The valet parking made my stay convenient as there aren’t many garages around. Also it’s an in/out valet so you can use your car as needed. Highly recommended The Kensington. Will stay again next time I’m in SF.

Perfect choice for the best of San Francisco.

Incredible property with perfect location to sample all that San Francisco has to offer. Easy walking distance to China Town, Warf and ballpark. Very friendly and helpful staff made this quick, daddy-daughter pilgrimage a truly memorable experience. Loved the Sears restaurant a half-block away. Local elegance, excellent service and food. World-class shopping steps away.

    Amazing staff

The staff there are amazing. The people who work the front desk are very accommodating and they know the area very well. They can point you to my direction and tell you the best way to get there. Going to another SF Giants game at the end of August and we Will definitely be coming back to the Kensington!!!!!!

Valet is $62 a day and not optional

Valet parking is 55 plus tax we paid $62 a day and it says optional but it’s not because there is no self parking garage. You either pay valet or drive around the city looking for a self parking garage! Then the next day an employee entered our room at 8am while I was in my underwear! She had no explanation and it was a very uncomfortable situation!

Great, historical hotel. Room was beautiful. Staff is super friendly and helpful. With the historical nature of the building (which I love) comes problematic elevator service- it went out while we stayed. We walked to the 9th floor, which was fine for us- but may not be feasible for all guests. Loved it though!

    Great hotel in Union Square.

Overall, this is a great little hotel. I went with my 3 adult daughters and stayed in 2 rooms. Each room was very clean and well stocked. Beds and pillows were comfortable. The rooms were large enough to allow walking around comfortably, which can be a problem in these older hotels. The location is right in Union Square and walking distance to shopping, dining, and Chinatown. The staff was super friendly and helpful. My only negative is the cost of valet parking. $55 plus fees/taxes per night is ridiculous.
