We were moved to the U Hotel
Our original reservation was with Grand Hotel Union. Upon checking in, the concierge advised that they were transferring us to the U Hotel, which caters more for the business guests (the hotels are connected). So this review is for the U Hotel. Pros: great location, friendly staff, great breakfast selection. Cons: the room was outdated. The aircon was centrally controlled. Concierge advised they could switch it off, but it was still too hot which made for a restless sleep and this was March. We weren’t comfortable leaving the balcony door open for security reason. I wish the hotel didn’t advertise room availability for Grand Union Hotel if they’re transferring guests next door. Although the location is perfect, I would hesitate to book this hotel again for this reason.

This hotel is central to the town and gives you easy access to many points of interest. It's spotless and breakfast was vast and well prepared. Staff were very helpful and chatty

Fair
The Grand Hotel Union advertises itself to be a more luxurious hotel than its sister hotel. For the higher price I expected to have an upgraded experience. This was not the case. I received a smaller room than normal, a view of the back of a building, no balcony, same limited range of news-only tv channels and a bathroom you could hardly turn around in.

The staff were amazingly charming and helpful. Especially at the reception area and dining area. They really are what make the hotel super great.

Like a dream of old Carniola. Beautiful Art Nouveau architecture from 1904 with lots of great details, but fully updated, sparkling clean and modern. Staff is friendly, attentive. Very comfortable bed. Massive breakfast buffet includes interesting Slovenian specialties in addition to the usual stuff. Location can't be beat, just off the main plaza of historic downtown Ljubljana. Love this place, hope to return.

Lives up to its name. The hotel is ideally situated within a very short walk of the city centre, great restaurants and approx 600m from the long distance bus and train terminals. Rooms are large and beautifully appointment. The breakfast however seals the deal. You are spoilt for choice with a MASSIVE hot and cold buffet. It really was the perfect visit for us

A very enjoyable stay in Ljubljana
Super location in Ljubljana! A large (grand) hotel close to so many of the city’s walkable attractions. The staff throughout the hotel were helpful and very polite. Slovenian people are super friendly. The breakfast morning was fantastic; many options for all tastes and diets. The swimming pool was pleasant but a little chilly in December...make sure you book a slot to use it.

Very nice old world building feel but at the same time it feels like it has not been updated since the 90's. Our suite had a closed outdated layout that didn't allow for an easy lounging and use of the space. There were not enough electrical plugs to charge our electronics or they were placed in weird places that were not convenient. The outdated cherry wood paneling everywhere did not feel luxurious. There is no common space in the lobby to hang out or sit and wait for the rest of your party. The gym was recently updated and it has all the things that one would need for a good workout. Although, the bench was wobbly And needs to be fixed. The gym, again, is divided into three or four small spaces that feel claustrophobic and has white (hospital-like) tiles on the walls that feel cold and uninviting. The hotel needs to be refurbished to provide the guests with a true 4 star experience that saves all the historical architectural aspects of the building but also gives the guests modern amenities and rooms that meet a 21st century traveler's requirements. The spa and the pool were nice and gave a serene feeling. Both the bar and the cafe felt outdated and cold with white flourescent lighting. The hours of the cafe didn't make sense to us either. The best part was breakfast. The breakfast area looked updated with nice tables, great warm lighting, and comfortable chairs. The food was great and it included a couple of gluten free options as well as vegan options!
