Hotel U is a pleasant place for a short break.
Hotel U is fairly modern, built in the '80s I would guess. It is odd therefore that it is not wheelchair accessible, as far as I could see. There are 4 steps up to reception and there is no lift. Car parking seemed adequate - I'm not sure what you do if it is full. The receptionist on duty when we arrived was very pleasant and spoke good English. The rooms are large and reasonably well fitted out: mine had a double bed, desk, chair and a settee. The cupboard was quite flimsy, but it did have a fridge built in. The main lighting in the room was quite dim. The en-suite was fairly large, and featured a hair-drier as well as the usual facilities, although oddly the shower did not have a door to it. None of my group slept very well while we were there, but we couldn't identify any reason. We put it down to the strange German pillows, which are more like small duvets. English visitors - take your own pillows if you can. Breakfast was the usual Continental style. There is no bar in the hotel, although a small range of drinks can be purchased from reception. There is a good Chinese buffet about 10 minutes walk away (China Garden) and a very good (and cheap) pizzeria just in front of the hotel. We were attending the Games Fair in Essen, and would have liked to see more than the four tables that were available in what could loosely be described as the lounge area. All in all this is a quiet and comfortable place to stay.

Functional and clean
This is absolutely a no-frills hotel but it's functional and clean at a very good price. We were looking for somewhere to sleep while visiting family who lived in the area and this hotel fulfilled the need. We didn't eat breakfast there but that would have been an extra cost. Shame there were no facilities for hot drinks in the evenings - just a vending machine would have been good. Ear plugs were included though as the rooms at the front were on a busy road. A single room was just big enough, though one of us was given a twin room despite being a single occupant, which was good. The bed felt very well used, which was surprising as we thought this was a reasonably new hotel. The receptionist was friendly enough and spoke English.You have to pay on arrival.I would use it again.

Lovely hotel for cooler days
The hotel was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. It was also very cheap for how nice it was. The downside to the stay was that my room was extremely hot and was above a busy road, so when the window was open it was very noisy. The hotel had thoughtfully left earplugs in the room to deal with this, and it wouldn't have been a problem on cooler day, but I found it hard to sleep.

Basic but very clean and friendly
Late booking for techno classic car show this was the nearest/affordable hotel to the show there is u Bahn station a mile or so down the road which takes you to mulheim station wher you car hop on the u18 to essen and then to the u11 to the show takes about an hour but still convenient if your not in a hurry.taxi very expensive but aren't they all. Buy a combi ticket along with your entrance ticket online and for a couple of euros you can get on and off as many times as you like it includes most trains trams u Bahn buses so great value . We go every year but left it late this one. Still great trip.
