Profile: Shimogyo Ward

Shimogyo is in downtown Kyoto, and includes Kyoto station as well as the iconic 131-meter Kyoto Tower. Scale the structure to be rewarded by stunning panoramic views of downtown Kyoto and the surrounding mountains of Higashiyama and Arashiyama from its observation deck, 100 meters above ground level.

For a spot of retail therapy, head 2.5 km north to Shijō Kawaramachi, a hectic intersection that’s home to Kyoto’s most renowned shops. Browse designer clothing at the elegant Takashimaya department store, before descending to the gleaming basement food hall to sample some mouthwatering gourmet cuisine.

    Amazing.. on the outside ONLY

Where to begin... We arrived at the central station of Kyoto which is very close to the hotel which is really good. We then took a short walk to the hotel and it looks really nice on the outside (very fancy..). When we checked in we had some difficulties with the communication as the staff behind the reception only spoke English to a very limited degree. Still no problem so far.. we booked a nice room (not the cheapest standard room) and expected a decent room. However, when we checked into the room we were shocked... it was so tiny that even for Japanese standards they should be embarrassed. My wife and I could not move at the same time as the room was simply too small. We were in Tokyo before and that hotel room was smallish but a massive palace in comparison to this shoe box. Seriously, if you are looking for a really really tiny room then look no further but this was just another thing.. we then complained to the front desk and paid to get a slightly bigger room.. the problem is not so much that the room is tiny but that there is heaps of bulky unnecessary furniture in it as well. As a result of this trip I can only recommend you one thing.. book another hotel or suffer the consequences of feeling like a tuna fish in a tinned box.

overall very nice stay, but the only things that I don't like is the breakfast menu has pork all over the place. The hotel should consider to be more accomodating with varieties of menu
