4/10 Fair

Unacceptable room
We stayed here on the 6th May for one night, matteress had springs coming through, dirty towel screwed up on radiator in bathroom then dirty stained towel folded on side, also bath towels not at their best both stained. Room very tired and for what we paid would not recommend to others nor would we stay again, not worth the money we paid.

Clean warm room.
We had room 14. Friendly staff. Room was a good size, (enough for three people) with one double bed and a single bed, there was a wardrobe with good storage. The mortise lock on the door was loose but it did it's job keeping the door locked. There is a little notice board on a side table with the WiFi details. A portable heater provided but it was not required as the room was adequately heated. Very clean. Bathroom also clean and warm, though the shower drains slowly. There are selection of black teas and coffee sachets provided. Noted that the kettle contained water, presumably used and left by previous occupant. Not the fault of the inn, however during the night woken up by someone trying to open our room door by mistake. And later on, the fire alarm went off around 1am for about 5 mins. Rest of the night was interrupted sleep as a result. Overall adequate for what we required for an overnight stay.

2/10 Poor

Worst experience ever . Manager call me asap
Booked a break away for my wife as she is 5 months pregnant. We have lost 4 babies in the last 14months and this was the first chance for me to treat her after covid. We picked up our keys for the room about 6pm and as soon as we entered the room the smell hit us. It was really musty and smelled like a sewer and there was dirty toilet roll on the floor of the bathroom. I told the member of staff immediately and she called the owners wife who said if the rooms smells offer them a free drink or their money back I then spoke to the woman myself and just asked how she could help clean the room as I didn't want my pregnant wife in a dirty room. Her response was , "the room was cleaned this morning so I don't believe you that it's smells , your wife is just too sensitive because she's pregnant. Maybe she should have just stayed at home. She said "if you think the room isn't clean then take the refund and go elsewhere. I searched for other hotels and the only availability within 10 miles was £350 so I told this to the woman and I said I can't afford to pay £350 to stay somewhere else. Her reply was "it's not my fault you can't afford to stay in York, you should just go home" So there we where out in the cold rain at night with my wife 5 months pregnant. In the end I paid £120 stay in a hotel 35 minutes drive away and we had to cancel our plans and dinner reservations in York. The worst hotel experience of my life , I'm awaiting contact from a manager asap I have video

Great location, not so comfy beds
I received an email with self check in details though when we arrived, a lovely lady came and helped us to our room. We had parked on the street outside to do a quick check in before going to find parking however, they do have parking at the back (after reading other reviews it may be over summer this is used as a beer garden). It was full though one of the staff members moved some furniture out of the way to give us enough room to park - very kind & helpful <3 The location was perfect and just a 10 minute walk to where we had booked for dinner and such a beautiful walk through York at night, I was mesmerised. The room was nice and tidy, with tea/coffee etc in the room, it was however, freezing. We kindly asked for a plug in heater as the radiator wasn't coming on. When we came back from dinner, they had left one in the room and it was lovely and toasty. Just what we needed after getting caught in the rain. It turned out the radiator then was working too! We were in room 11, a twin room. The beds weren't so comfy, you could see the springs through the mattresses. The bed frames were rather squeeky, not great when you're tossing and turning to get comfy. The pub closed before we got back (we got back at 10.15pm so they must have shut early), though we could hear all the foot steps from upstairs, thankfully I sleep with ear plugs! Check out was very reasonable at 10.30am, we had got up early and took a walk to find a cafe for breakfast which was only a short stroll away.
