Nobody's perfect, but they are close
This lodge sits in a beautiful area near a white sand private beach but still feels a little off the beaten path. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful without being fake and it's very easy to organize any activity you want to do across Zanzibar through the front desk. Every driver and guide we had was of very high quality. Everyone was especially nice to our sons and it felt very family-friendly. Our sons learned to play Bao with the locals and we appreciated the staff taking time to show them how to play. We definitely would love to come back.

Great place!
We loved our four night stay here. Service was great. Rooms were comfortable and food was food too. The beach was by far the nicest on that coast and we loved being able to use the reef shoes to explore the ocean.

Quiet and serene Lodge
Very nice lodge, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, it's a great place if you want something quiet and out of the way. Incredible views and the water is really warm. Word of warning to get out to the lodge book a shuttle through the web site rather than taking a taxi. The cost for the taxi will be more than the entire trip itself, as the lodge is an hour and a half away. The lodge itself is very family-friendly and feels native to Zanzibar, this is the perfect place to relax.

Lovely little paradise
This place was the perfect place for me to relax and enjoy a beach paradise after a hectic (and wonderful) safari. What a wonderful little gem this is! This is a small lodge with a staff that is very friendly and nice. The beach is private with cute rustic lounges on the beach so you can choose to have sun or shade. A great place to walk the beach. The reception area is large with comfy chairs and couches with a nice rustic bar and lovely dining area. The food was diverse and very good. I especially enjoyed the special Swahili night dinner. I chose the beach front bungalow and loved laying in the swing on my porch to read and relax, watch the sunrise and sunset. The room was clean with a comfy bed. This reminded me of beach cottages I have stayed many years ago, which are hard to find these days. There is no TV, no air conditioning , but there was always a nice breeze and the fan kept me comfortable. The little beach bar is just funky and friendly and will make you smile. This is not a fancy resort that caters to those who want a modern western stay or that would freak at a few ants or a lizard. But for me it was perfect in every way. There will be someone at reception to greet you when you come and immediately I felt at home. The very sweet dogs and cats make it even more homey(they kept to themselves like the perfect pets). The arranged transportation to the Rock for me which was a great even thought it is close enough to walk. I also appreciated having good WiFi

5 Star Service, 2.5 Star Hotel
First of all, I LOVE this hotel. The service is some of the best I've had anywhere, however, the facilities are not as advertised. My colleague and I tacked on a couple nights to our month long business trip to enjoy Zanzibar. We wanted a bit of luxury and a nice beach to be pampered and relaxed. The 4 star rating, the fact it had a gym and in suite laundry were very appealing. A room with two beds was mandatory and this property complied, according to the Hotels.com listing. My problem is not with the property itself, but that the Hotels.com listing is totally false. This is NOT a star property. it is a 2.5 star property. Here is a list of what is not true in the Hotels.com listing: Fitness Facilities: The "gym" is a hut with two kayaks and water shoe rentals. The Hotels.com listing says there are washers and dryers in the room, there are not. It says "premium bedding". It's a foam mattress. It says sofa bed. There are no sofa beds. There is no nightclub. There is no airport shuttle - you have to pay for the taxi they arrange. There is no indoor pool There is no indoor or outdoor tennis courts - there a covered ping pong table and volleyball nets on the beach. Additionally, 4 star hotels have air conditioning and glass in the windows. The bungalows have screens over lattice for windows (no glass), The Double Tree down the street is a 4 star hotel. The Breezes down the street is a 5 star hotel. This is nowhere close to those.

Kichanga Lodge-End September Vacation
The stay was awesome, albeit that there were a few issues we were not expecting, for example the Hotels.com website say that Kichanga has HD TV's in rooms and premium satellite channels, which was not the case. There is a communal lounge, with hardly any channels to talk of. the website also indicated a Night club, which there was not. Anyway, wifi worked pretty well, so if you have netflix and a laptop, your'e good! The rooms also did not have aircon, however the fans and the open plan nature of the room did make it bearable, not sure I'd feel the same in an equatorial December, but was fine for end of September. The half board breakfast and Dinner, was also not to bad, however leans toward the fishy side, which is par for the course down here. all in all the food was pretty good and there is a menu with more popular westernized food, if you want to order from the kitchen directly. With regards to service, it was impeccable! With regards to location, also impeccable, all in all it was a top trip, especially if you want to relax. It is also close enough to other lodges which allow day access, if you need a change in scenery. The prices were also very reasonable, with the average cocktail costing you around 7$, which was well worth it, especially..... and I recommend having the Dawa, which is made with a local Gin....absolutely fabulous. I would definitely go back there!

Best beach in Zanzibar, but not the accommodation
It was by far the best beach in Zanzibar I have seen. The staff were very friendly. The terrace and the view from the bungalow was absolutely stunning, the sofa and the hammock on the terrace were really nice. I loved how calm the place was, how private, both the bungalow and the beach. The terrace is great for doing pilates and yoga. I'm really sorry to say that but the truth really was that I couldn't sleep the 2 nights I spent there, the mattress was the weirdest thing I've been on, it was like a mud hole that sucks you in the middle. Whilst you try to sleep you always roll to that hole in the middle of the mattress, it was soooo uncomfortable and I had massive back pain both days despite doing yoga and pilates every morning and evening. I actually slept on the beach during the day because I was so so tired, the sun loungers were very comfortable and I was thinking sleeping on them during the night… The bathroom was not clean at all, very mouldy and full with limestone and dirt both the sink and the shower with a very weird smell, I actually went to the ocean to take a bath because the bathroom was too disgusting. The food was also not tasty at all, both the breakfast and dinner, not even the fruit, I was hungry for lunch as well whereas with all other accommodations in Zanzibar I was totally fine with half board. If they'd clean or refurbish the bathroom, get a new mattress and cook better food, it'd deserve 5 stars. I stayed at 5 different hotels during my trip

Beautiful, peaceful spot, with good food and incredibly welcoming staff who can't do enough for you. Spent lots of time relaxing in the hammock on our private veranda, or strolling along the beautiful beach. The best part was doing yoga classes watching the sunrise over the Indian Ocean - pure bliss

AMAZING VACATION!
A friend and I stayed here for 4 days following a month long study abroad trip to Tanzania. We chose Kichanga based off a recommendation from another friend who had stayed here the previous year after her study abroad. She told us it was a nice place, but it exceeded every expectation we had! First of all, the room was amazing. We had a wonderful (albeit, a little hard) king sized bed, with an amazing bathroom and even a changing room! Everything was provided for us - from the beach towels, to the beach bag, to bottled water everyday. The food was really great. Breakfast and dinner were included with our stay - and how can you go wrong with that. We both usually had the fish dish every night and it was always prepared nicely. They also have yoga, which we scheduled for sunrise. The yoga instructor, Ilse, is amazing! I've never done yoga before and she made sure to explain all the positions and ensure I was doing it properly to not hurt myself. It was a great way to start the day. The service and staff were probably the best I've ever encountered. A few days before we were set to arrive, I received an email asking if I'd like a car service to pick us up from the airport. We also wanted to set up some tours for one of the days, and we went to the front desk and they took care of literally everything - so we were able to do the Spice tour, Stone Town and Prisoner Island all in one day for only $95 USD.

Beautiful beach and great staff
Stunning location with a beautiful private beach. We stayed in one of the ocean bungalows, which had a beautiful balcony with a great view. Staff was super nice and accommodating and helped us with a variety of needs, from broken shoes to stomach troubles. Cocktails were delicious, food wasn't amazing but it was pretty good. Highly recommended!

Good with a few quirks
Staff were generally friendly and helpful. Good quality of food, and a nice and quite environment and location. There is some complimentary food and coffee during the day. Bungalow room layout is a bit odd, there's not enough air circulation, even though windows are on 3 sides. No AirCon, only ceiling and standing fans, but that wasn't such a problem for us. On the first dinner the staff had failed to prepare a Vegetarian meal, although we requested it at lunchtime. They forgot to pass on the info to the late shift. That can happen, but for an expensive place like this it was disappointing. Overall it's a nice place, but if we go to Zanzibar again we might choose a different hotel.

Great Hotel and Great Staff
Had a great experience from the moment we got off the plane in Zanzibar. Was met by the hired and proceeded to the hotel. Once we were there the expectation was for the typical resort hotel with guest abound but this place was quiet and virtually asleep. Masai greeted us and and hotel staff greeted us as well and was willing to prepare a meal for us because the journey was long and we arrived late. The room was very comfortable. The beach front bungalow is a requirement as it is the best was to experience this property. Walks on the beach was amazing and relaxing. By far sitting and doing absolutely nothing was the best part. There was not blaring beach music not loud parties and not pressure to upgrade to more elaborate accommodations or buy excursions. You could everything or nothing at all; Truly a gratifying experience.
