Bergen can be a lovely place to visit with your loved one. When a couple in love visit the city, Bergen aims to do all it can to let that love grow. Many couples enjoy relaxing in a spa, and Bergen has several places that offer such services both in the centre and peripheral areas.

Otherwise, there are plenty of places to hide away a deux, from strolling in the parks and streets and 'smaug' to the many small cosy cafés. There's nothing quite like sharing an umbrella, strolling arm in arm and letting fate show you the way, but here are some ideas to get you started.

    Flow State, Bergen

    Bergen's centre for floating therapy

    Flow State, Bergen
    • Couples

Stress and tension are the worst thing for your relationship. And Flow State has the solution. They propose floating therapy - a concept that aims to remove all sensory stimuli so that the body and mind completely disconnect from everything. Visitors get an individual floating tank each, filled with 750 litres of salt water with a temperature that makes the skin feel neither cold nor hot.

The body floats high in salt water, and when the tank closes over you and everything turns black, you lie back and float for an hour, alone with your own thoughts. The sound of gentle music means your hour is up, but by then you will hopefully have emptied your head of all unwanted thoughts.

    Nordnes Sjøbad

    Swimming in the sea fjord

    Nordnes Sjøbad
    • Couples

On hot summer days, many people flock to Nordnesparken at the far end of the headland, with its fjords on all sides. It's the perfect place to enjoy a glass of white wine and a small picnic basket from a cosy spot on the grass. You might even be tempted to take a dip, and Nordnes Sjøbad is the very place for that. Find a spot on the grass and roll out your towel.

Head for the water and the diving board, and then it's a case of seeing who dares to jump off first. The temperature of the water is rarely high, so here you can score brownie points by having a towel ready for your partner and by sharing some body heat.

Location: Nordnesparken 30, 5005 Bergen, Norway

Open: From June to September. Monday-Friday: 07.00-20.00. Saturday and Sunday: 10.00-20.00. From October to March. Thursday: 16.00-21.00. From Friday to Wednesday: closed.

    Visit Troldhaugen

    Music to your ears

    Visit Troldhaugen
    • Couples
    • History

Music taste is a very personal matter, but for anyone with a love of classical music, Edvard Grieg's home on Troldhaugen is one of Bergen's major attractions. The property is full of romantic nooks and crannies, with narrow paths and strategically placed benches. Best of all, however, is the intimate concert hall with a view of the peaceful Nordåsvannet behind the stage.

One of Edvard Grieg's most famous song compositions is the setting of H.C. Andersen's poem ‘I love you’. If it's on the programme of events for the day's concert, then this is the time to gaze tenderly at your loved one, especially when the song reaches its climax with the line "I love you forever and eternity".

    Kode 3

    National romance for newly weds

    Kode 3
    • Couples
    • History

Sharing an art experience together offers both sensual and intellectual stimulation. Kode 3 features many great works signed by Norwegian artists in the 1800s and early 1900s, including superstar Edvard Munch. His works are often known for their melancholy and anguish, so to keep the mood light, make sure you also see the national romantics.

By far the most romantic picture is Adolph Tidemand's "Bryllupstoget gjennom skogen", which shows a beautiful young wedding-dressed couple riding on their respective horse, with a lively entourage of girls dressed in national costumes and a fiddler - a great opportunity to revel in the joy of being newlyweds.

Location: Rasmus Meyers allé 7, 5015 Bergen, Norway

Open: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 11.00-16.00. Thursday: 11.00-20.00. Saturday and Sunday: 11.00-17.00.

Go for a walk in Nygårdsparken

    Hand-in-hand in Bergen's prettiest park

Go for a walk in Nygårdsparken
    • Couples

Nygårdsparken was planted over a hundred years ago in an English landscape style. This means that it is shaped and planted so that it forms distinctly picturesque environments - the perfect backdrop for romance. In summer, it is resplendent in green and full of life and movement with playing kids, sun worshipers and people sitting at the outdoor café.

And yet there's always plenty of space to be yourself too. Almost all the trees in the park are deciduous trees, which means the park is at its finest in autumn when the leaves turn their red, yellow and brown hues. That's the time to wrap up in cosy jumpers, coats and scarves and go for a leisurely walk through the piles of leaves in the morning frost - with only each other for company, and the swans in the swan pond.

Stop for a coffee at Cafe Blom

Cosy café amidst the student district

Stop for a coffee at Cafe Blom
    • Couples
    • Food

At lunchtime, the cafés on Nygårdshøyden are filled with academics, long queues, lively discussions and stressed staff. This also applies to little Blom, but if you turn up just before or after lunch, its virtually empty. Then you can choose whether to sit under a tree outside in the square, or at the best table indoors.

The staff are happy to take their time if they can, and serve delicious coffee - probably the best in town. The menu includes homemade cakes and other sweet pastries that are perfect for sharing over a coffee latte. If you are proper coffee lovers, you can even take one of Blom's barista courses together.

Open: From Monday-Friday: 08.00-17.00. Saturday and Sunday: 10.00-17.00.
