Black's Beach

Black’s Beach is a secluded area beneath the Torrey Cliffs that is well known for its magnificent waves and surfing to the south and clothing-optional area to the north. This beach is not for the faint of heart because of the strong swells that make swimming dangerous, as well as the chance of running into nude beachgoers. The approach can also be strenuous.

If you're up for an adventure, this is a great spot to watch locals surf. The bluffs above Black's Beach are also lined with extravagant mansions and high-tech labs, providing a stunning sight.

Highlights of Black’s Beach

If you're looking for an exciting stop off of the beaten path, Black’s Beach may just be right up your alley. Experienced adventure seekers may enjoy hang-gliding or paragliding from the glider port on the Torrey Bluffs above the beach.

Many surfers consider Black’s Beach to have the best waves in the area due to the swift swells caused by a deep valley on the ocean floor referred to as a "submarine cannon." You can also access the challenging but picturesque Ho Chi Minh Trail here, which leads to La Jolla Farms.

Good to know about Black’s Beach

There are several ways to access Black’s Beach, but all require some rock climbing. The easiest approach is from the La Jolla Shores Pier, but this is only accessible during low tide because there is an area that is impassable as the tides rise. If you take this route, be sure to snap a photo with the famous Mushroom House on the way.

Black’s Beach is located between Torrey Pines State Park to the north and La Jolla Shores to the south, and you can access bathrooms and showers at either of these locations.
