I love this hotel and have stayed there three times now. Close to Durham for a lovely walk around. We stayed in the actual castle at the top, which was lovely, but there were so many stairs. We also stayed in the stables, which is where I prefer. Super food and the breakfasts are fabulous. We just like to stay for a while and are about to book again. Great place 👌

The castle was quirky and interesting. The only criticism would be that the lights in the rooms were very low wattage and thus the room appeared very dark which made it difficult to read anything. Perhaps at least one light with a bright bulb would be good. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and the food in the restaurant was excellent. It was a very pleasant stay in a historic building which was set in a nice location nearby to the main town and an excellent base for travelling around the area.

As a 600-year old castle, the hotel has a wonderful atmosphere, and all the staff gave a warm and relaxed welcome. We had room in the castle itself, and didn't think it over-expensive at all by our modest standards: excellent facilities, and very good options for eating in the library/bar or the restaurant. You do need a car as the hotel is outside the town - beside a golf course that welcomes visitors, and the Durham Cricket Club ground. We've stayed before, and will be back. The only grumble I can make is that the toast with an otherwise excellent breakfast was consistently a bit soggy!
