Comfortable old coaching inn
A beautiful old coaching inn facing the town square of a picture-book town. Good food, friendly staff and comfortable room. Just a bit of a climb to the top floor for a pair of old wrinklies.

Very average
The reviews indicated it was top notch but it really isn’t. Friendly staff but tired bedrooms. Restaurant food very disappointing (it’s a chain) and breakfast really poor - reheated bacon, a cheap sausage, a spoonful of dried up beans, half a piece of black pudding and poor quality orange juice. Not quite what we’d expected for a high end market town. Great location though in the market square. Wish we’d opted for an independent restaurant for our evening meal as the heavily battered fish was awful.

Great place but let down with service.
It's a shame England were playing on the day we arrived as the staff were totally taken up with table service in the beer garden but wouldn't let us sit at any of the empty tables in the bar/restaurant to enjoy a quiet drink. We also couldn't book a table for either Saturday night or Sunday lunch as they were fully booked. (A friend has since told me that she was asked if she wanted to book meals when she made her reservation - we weren't asked).
The main pub was absolutely packed all day and night - we went to a nearby pub to eat and drink. The staff and locals were fighting in the street on our way back on Saturday night. I guess that's what an England win creates. 😆
Otherwise the hotel was lovely and the breakfast was good.
We just felt that they could have made a bit more effort for paying guests with no interest in football.
