Centro Histórico

Lagos' Centro Histórico captivates with cobblestone streets winding past 16th-century walls and golden churches adorned with azulejo tiles. The haunting former slave market stands as a sobering historical monument while ancient fortifications frame stunning harbour views. Traditional tavernas serve fresh seafood and local specialities between historic explorations and cultural discoveries. Highly walkable streets limit vehicle access, making this area perfect for leisurely exploration. Family-run restaurants and waterfront cafés offer authentic Portuguese flavours while boutique hotels in converted historic buildings provide charming accommodation with old-world character.

Porto de Mós

Porto de Mós wraps you in a golden sand dream framed by dramatic ochre cliffs that practically beg to be photographed. This peaceful pocket of the Algarve offers the perfect escape from Lagos' busier spots with scenic coastal trails winding along the Atlantic. The Ponta da Piedade lighthouse stands watch nearby, while the protected cove below creates ideal swimming conditions for beach lovers. The area serves up fresh seafood at beachfront restaurants where you can watch the sunset paint the cliffs. Modern holiday apartments and villas with sea views make up most accommodation, though public transport is limited so having a car is smart. Beach season brings the area to life, but even then, you'll find plenty of quiet spots along the coastal paths.

Ameijeira

Ameijeira gives you the best of both worlds in Lagos—calm residential streets just a short stroll from stunning beaches. Walk to Praia da Batata or Praia do Pinhão for golden sands and azure waters without the tourist crush. The area feels authentically Portuguese with its whitewashed homes and terracotta roofs, perfect for travellers who want local flavour. You'll need to head into Lagos centre for restaurants and shopping, just 15-20 minutes away on foot. Most accommodation here are upscale holiday rentals and private villas with pools, ideal for those seeking a peaceful home base with easy beach access.

Whether you want to collect beach glass or watch the sunset, Praia da Luz is a spot you might want to check out, located 3.1 mi (5.1 km) from central Lagos. Our travelers also like this walkable area for its beaches. Catch the sunset by the shore at Luz Beach, just a short walk away.

Learn more about Lagos

Beneath limestone cliffs, this Algarve gem invites exploration of its historic old town where narrow cobblestone streets wind between whitewashed buildings adorned with blue tiles. Climb to the clifftop castle for Atlantic panoramas that explain why explorers once set sail from these shores. Praia do Camilo and Dona Ana Beach offer perfect swimming coves framed by golden rock formations. Don't miss Ponta da Piedade, where boat tours navigate through sea arches and grottoes sculpted by centuries of waves. Summer brings vibrant nightlife to the marina area, while seafood restaurants serve the day's catch year-round. Visit the municipal market for local flavours, then join locals for sunset drinks overlooking the harbour where Henry the Navigator once planned his voyages.

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Lagos

  1. Book for the cheapest times: Visiting Lagos on a budget is a wonderful idea, especially during January, February, and November when hotel prices may drop to lower prices, offering an affordable stay. With at least 4 to 5 days at your disposal, you can explore a variety of landmarks and cultural attractions that highlight Lagos' rich history. Delight in the beach, marina, monuments, and family-friendly and romantic spots, while enjoying a plethora of sightseeing, cafe experiences, guided tours, leisurely walks, and relaxing moments, ensuring great value for money.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: If you're planning a trip to Lagos, start by exploring the DealsOpens in a new window section on Hotels.com where you may discover discounted luxury hotels. For spontaneous travel, check out the Last-Minute Deals section that could offer savings on your stay if you book close to your departure date. Additionally, the Smart Shopping tool, available via the app, may help you compare hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you're more likely to find the best rates for your preferred hotels. You could also enable email alerts or push notifications to stay informed about flash sales and special promotions.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may vary depending on factors such as a hotel's location, star rating and the time of year, so being flexible with your dates could help you save on your stay in a Lagos hotel. For those seeking a unique experience, boutique hotels might offer a more personalised stay and potentially better value. When you book with Hotels.com, we will inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below average, and if it is on the higher side, we may suggest alternative dates that could help you find a more affordable option.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels in close proximity to the city centre generally tend to be more expensive. However, thanks to Lagos's excellent public transport connections, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel located further afield that remains well connected. For those wishing to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
