Exploring Melbourne

Visitors to Melbourne will find even the most luxurious five-star hotels in the country's second-largest city are fairly affordable compared to their counterparts in other world-class cities. A large percentage of Melbourne's high-end hotels are situated in the inner urban neighbourhood of Southbank, less than two kilometres south of the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD). The five-star Crown Metropol is linked to Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, making it particularly popular among business guests.

Southbank also contains the tallest skyscraper in all of Melbourne, the nearly 300m high Eureka Tower, which looks down on the nearby Crown Towers and all the other Melbourne five-star establishments. Southbank may initially appear to be a district dominated by high-rise apartments, office buildings, and luxury hotels; however, it is also home to one of Melbourne's major entertainment hubs, the Southbank Promenade along the Yarra River's southern bank.

There is a range of options for all travelers. The most popular hotel in Melbourne is the Southbank Boulevard Melbourne, which has been booked &TravellersChoiceBooked1 times from our Hotels.com verified guests. Our guests also highly recommended 94 Highett in Melbourne as it has been reserved &TravellersChoiceBooked2 times.

Sights nearby

Streets arranged in an easy-to-follow grid pattern, an efficient public transit system which travels throughout the city, and the fact most attractions are within a half-hour journey of each other makes Melbourne an easy city to explore.

- Eureka Tower

No building in the entire Southern Hemisphere contains a higher observation deck than the 285m high Eureka Skydeck on the 88th floor of Melbourne's tallest skyscraper. Skydeck visitors can enjoy the view with free binoculars, any of the 30 viewfinders throughout the deck, or with the Edge glass cube which extends from the tower. The Terrace outside area is closed when high winds blow across the city.

- Crown Entertainment Complex

Melbourne's biggest ballroom, the Palladium Room, is merely one of many attractions situated within this sprawling entertainment complex. This casino, among the largest on Earth, occupies two full city blocks along the Yarra River's banks in Southbank. Not only does the casino contain countless slot machines, poker rooms, and places to bet on sporting events, but it is also home to many of Melbourne's trendiest nightclubs and three upscale hotels.

- Melbourne Aquarium

The self-guided tour of Melbourne Aquarium takes visitors past four different levels as far as seven metres under the surface. Penguins and other Antarctic creatures frolic in real ice and snow on the ground floor, which also boasts a coral atoll extending from floor to ceiling. An octopus display stands next to the children's play area. The bravest of visitors may encounter tarantulas and scorpions in the two creepy caves.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

The Southgate shopping and business complex contains the 24-floor Langham five-star hotel in addition to a wide array of fashion boutiques, souvenir shops, and a riverside food court. Other Southbank shopping options include the Crown Casino Complex and a Sunday arts and crafts market close to the Melbourne Arts Centre. The Williamstown Docks is another trendy dining and partying spot in Melbourne, while Collins, Spring, and Swanston streets contain most of the city's top designer boutiques.

Public transport

Several major roads and five different tram lines travel through Southbank, less than two kilometres from Melbourne's CBD and many other major attractions. The majority of worthwhile places to see can be accessed in a 20-minute train or tram ride from the city centre, whose efficient grid system is often compared to Manhattan's. Public Transport Victoria makes navigating Melbourne easy thanks to its regularly updated Journey Planner.
