8/10 Very good

Silver Lake is a beautiful location, and Kit Carson Lodge was the perfect one-night escape from the Sacramento heat. We stayed in a basic four-room lodge building - ideal if you don't plan on spending much time indoors. The shared balcony has canvas dividers that provide visual privacy, though you can still hear your neighbors. That said, the sunrise view from the deck was spectacular!
The grounds are well-kept and the restaurant is excellent; we enjoyed delicious dinner and breakfast outdoors overlooking the lake. However, there were a few downsides: our bed felt old and uncomfortable, the screen door was bent (inviting mosquitoes), and the beach lounge chairs were in very poor condition. Also, be aware that you have to walk back up to the store to rent watercraft rather than paying at the beach, and the campfire isn't a nightly occurrence. The staff were all very helpful and nice.
Overall, we had a good stay and would consider returning - next time, we'll likely opt for a private cabin with a kitchen.

Silver Lake is a beautiful location and having cabins to rent on the lake side is pretty special. The cabins are old and rather quirky, but you can over look some inconveniences, like luke warm water, missing chairs for dining, no plugs in the sinks and even a mouse in your room. But when we checked in they charge me for the room even though I had paid for it . I had to find my credit card bill to show I had paid for the room. Once I showed them my credit card statement they refunded the money they charged me. On the second day of our 3 day stay they came to our cabin at 11:00am to check that we were staying another night. I said we were there for another night. Then at 1:30pm they came and said we had to move to another cabin and they gave us an hour to move out. They said that our booking was for 2 nights in 1 cabin and a third night in a different cabin which wasn't stated in our reservation. Moving without any prior notice was very disturbing and put a damper on the rest of our stay. I won't be returning and I won't be recommending this lodge.

The property itself is absolutely gorgeous, and the lake and surrounding scenery are worth visiting. However, the cabins did not look anything like the photos online. They were more like glamping, which would have been fine if the price reflected that, but I don't feel the accommodations were worth nearly $300 per night. Just know what you're getting before you book.
The biggest issue was that our cabin smelled very strongly of propane. We opened every window, including the large sliding doors to the porch, and ended up sleeping with everything open all night. The smell never went away and seemed to be coming from the stove, even though we never used it. By around 9:00 p.m., both of us had headaches, and we were also worried about our small dog being exposed to the fumes. We decided the safest option was to drive the two hours home that night.
Before leaving, we walked to the lodge and store to let someone know, but no one was there, and we couldn't find a drop box or any instructions for returning the key. We ended up waiting until they opened at 8:00 a.m. so we could return it in person. So, we froze that night with all the windows open. I explained the propane issue to the clerk, who had me write everything down.
One other thing to be aware of is that there is no WiFi or TV in the cabins. That may actually be a positive if you're looking to unplug, but it's something to know before you arrive.
I highly recommend the staff and food were amazing!

Do not stay at Kit Carson Lodge! This was the most Disappointing stay at hotel I have ever had. When I checked in and went to our room- Jeffrey- the room smelled of gas/propane. We tried to turn on the heater but the pilot light never lit. After going to the front desk I was helped by Candace as she came to the room fairly quickly & she seemed to “fix” the problem by slowly turning the thermostat over. Not long after the heater turned off and it didn’t work for the remainder of the night. At 1 am we woke up freezing (it was an expected low of 24 deg that night) and we could do nothing to get it to work and heard the pilot light trying to ignite all night long. As we laid awake we heard scurrying and we are pretty sure we had a mouse or two in our room running around. At 6 am and freezing I went find someone to fix the heater & see about breakfast. I couldn’t find anyone in the lodge and ran into the maintenance guy, as well as noticing that the restaurant doesn’t serve food until NOON! With a child this is not ok!After a few minutes the maintenance guy came and tried to fix the heater and he was unsuccessful. When he left to go find a screwdriver to work on it it randomly turned on. When checking out I voiced my complaint & was told I may get a 10% discount. That doesn’t cover freezing, not sleeping and losing a day because of the fact that we didn’t sleep. It was too expensive we should’ve camped.I would appreciate someone contacting me asap. I wouldn’t recommend to anyone!

Dirty and has pest problems
I booked three nights in a cabin. Upon arrival, I saw how rustic the cabin really was. The floors were dirty. There’s no hot water in the sinks. The heat didn’t work despite the nighttime low being in the 40s Fahrenheit. In the morning, I woke up and took a shower. The whole cabin was filled with toxic propane fumes from the on-demand hot water heater which exhausts straight into the living area. While I was out exploring, the kitchen trash can was raided by rodents who spread the contents around the kitchen and left droppings. While getting ready for bed, I saw a huge cockroach walk up the bedroom wall and disappear into the ceiling. After another cold night, I woke up early and decided that I couldn’t stand any more time here. I checked out at 9:30 am and spoke to the manager. He insisted that there was nothing he could do to offer me any sort of refund, not even for my unused 3rd night. I recommend avoiding this place.
