Top neighbourhoods in Ghent

Patershol

Patershol's medieval maze of cobblestone streets and step-gabled houses tells a thousand tales from Ghent's colourful past. Explore the imposing Gravensteen Castle, wander through the Old Fish Market, or discover local heritage at the House of Alijn. Art galleries and boutique shops tuck themselves between centuries-old buildings that have seen it all. The area serves up a feast of global flavours in its diverse restaurants, from traditional Flemish taverns to exotic international cuisine. Boutique hotels and cosy B&Bs in converted historic buildings offer charming stays with authentic character. The narrow streets make walking the best way to soak up Patershol's intimate, timeless atmosphere.

Graslei and Korenlei

Graslei and Korenlei's medieval quaysides transport you straight to Ghent's golden commercial heyday. Guild houses with ornate stepped gables reflect in the River Leie, creating one of Europe's most Instagram-worthy waterfront scenes. Cross St. Michael's Bridge for panoramic views or hop on a boat tour to see these architectural gems from a fresh angle. Restaurants housed in historic buildings serve Belgian classics on riverside terraces where cobblestones meet candlelight. Boutique hotels occupy converted guild houses, offering modern comforts behind centuries-old facades. The area is wonderfully walkable, with tram connections nearby when your feet need a break from those charming but uneven streets.

Kunstenkwartier

Kunstenkwartier is Ghent's cultural wonderland where art and history collide on cobblestone streets. St. Peter's Abbey and the Vooruit Arts Centre anchor this walkable area full of galleries and museums. Gothic spires rise above medieval guild houses while the Design Museum adds modern flair to the historic landscape. Local bistros serve traditional Flemish dishes like waterzooi as church bells mark the hours. The area's boutique hotels occupy converted historic buildings with original architectural details. Trams and dedicated bike lanes make getting around a breeze when your feet need a break from the cobblestones.

Ghent City Centre

Ghent City Centre wraps you in medieval magic with its imposing Gravensteen Castle and awe-inspiring St. Bavo's Cathedral housing the famous Ghent Altarpiece. Centuries-old guild houses line cobblestone streets and tranquil canals, creating a living museum you can actually wander through. The soaring Belfry watches over bustling squares where history feels delightfully alive and within reach. Car-free zones make exploring this medieval wonderland a breeze on foot, with trams connecting to outer districts when your feet need a break. Cosy brown cafés serve local beers alongside traditional Flemish dishes, while boutique hotels tucked into converted guild houses offer the perfect historic-meets-comfortable home base.

Elisabethbegijnhof

Step back in time as you wander the cobblestone pathways of Elisabethbegijnhof, a 13th-century UNESCO-listed haven. This medieval community features whitewashed houses with red-tiled roofs surrounding a peaceful central garden where ancient trees shade weathered benches. The Gothic St. Elisabeth Church anchors this contemplative area that offers a quiet retreat from Ghent's busier areas. While dining options are minimal within the beguinage itself, Ghent's centre is just a 15-minute walk away. The area prioritises its tranquil, non-commercial atmosphere over tourist amenities. Getting around requires walking, as narrow medieval streets restrict vehicle access and cobblestones can challenge cyclists.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Ghent by IHG

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Ghent by IHG

8/10 Good
"The room size at Holiday Inn Express Ghent was good and comfortable. There were plenty of USB charging ports and power sockets, which was very convenient, and the TV was also quite large. The parking area had plenty of available spaces, possibly because the parking fee of €20 per night discouraged some guests from using it. One major issue was the bathroom drainage. The water drained very slowly, and once the shower was turned on, the water quickly overflowed and left the bathroom floor completely wet. The shower area was also not very slip-resistant and lacked any grab bars, which could be a safety concern. Breakfast was included and offered a reasonably good selection."

Van der Valk Hotel Gent

10/10 Excellent
"We stayed at this hotel for our Euro family vacation in August 2026. It's in a great location, with an Albert Heijn supermarket at the back and a Tesla supercharger at the front. They have basement parking, which was nice. Hotel quality is excellent throughout. Staff was friendly. They respond to emails quickly if you have any questions. Rooms are big as well as the corridors. So much space. Cottes restaurant has amazing food. Reasonably priced as well. I had a pork ribs starter that came to my table a bit cold. It was sorted and was delicious. Breakfast was also great with lots to choose from. Only problem I had with my room was the air conditioner & bathroom exhaust stopped working mid stay which was a shame. They offered to change to a new room the night before were going to leave so we declined as it was too much of a hassle to move. Overall I was happy with this hotel & would stay again in the future."

"Great hotel in terms of style and amenities. Stayed here with our family. However my young son cut his foot badly in the pool on a sharp metal edge and there was no one who could do first aid or had the right medical kit to help, despite trying to be helpful and sympathetic. No one took details and the manager never contacted us to check he was ok which was disappointing. We returned and asked if the manager was around but were told he was off for the weekend."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Ghent

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most affordable time to visit Ghent is between January and March, when hotel prices are lower. For those looking to explore the city's rich history and vibrant culture, staying for at least 2 to 3 days is recommended. This budget-friendly timeframe allows visitors to discover key landmarks, such as stunning museums, historical sites, and captivating theatres. Additionally, guests can enjoy charming cafés and indulge in shopping that reflects the local culture, all while benefiting from the great value for money offered during this period. Prices may drop further, making it an even more enticing option for travellers on a budget.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: To discover last-minute deals to Ghent, visit the DealsOpens in a new window or Last-Minute Deals section on Hotels.com, where you may find discounted hotel rates as your travel date approaches. Consider enabling email alerts or push notifications from Hotels.com to stay informed about flash sales and exclusive last-minute promotions, helping you seize opportunities to save. Additionally, the Smart Shopping tool available via the app allows you to compare hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you’re more likely to catch any drops in prices or newly available rooms, making your last-minute getaway hassle-free.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices can fluctuate based on various factors, including the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year. Therefore, having some flexibility with your travel dates may help you find a more economical option for your stay in a hotel in Ghent. For those in search of distinctive accommodations, boutique hotels can provide a more personalised experience and may offer better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we’ll inform you whether the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price appears to be on the higher end, we can suggest alternative dates that may help you discover a more favourable rate.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive; however, with Ghent's superb public transport connections, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel further afield that remains well linked. For those eager to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
