Top neighbourhoods in Dublin

Temple Bar

Temple Bar rocks with live music spilling from pubs tucked along cobblestone streets that echo Dublin's medieval past. The Irish Film Institute and Gallery of Photography offer cultural fixes between pub crawls, while the bustling nightlife scene keeps the energy high until 2am. Shoppers can browse artisan crafts and Celtic jewellery in charming boutiques dotting this entertainment district. Traditional pubs serve hearty Irish stews alongside perfect pints of Guinness, though expect tourist prices. Most visitors explore on foot, navigating the narrow streets where Georgian brick buildings house boutique hotels and hostels. The River Liffey provides peaceful moments away from the crowds when you need a breather.

Dublin Docklands

Dublin Docklands flips the script on traditional Irish charm with sleek glass towers and tech headquarters along the River Liffey. The striking Samuel Beckett Bridge stretches like a giant harp across the water while the gleaming Convention Centre and Bord Gáis Energy Theatre add contemporary flair. Stroll the waterfront promenades for picture-perfect views or catch a glimpse of maritime history at the Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship. Upscale waterfront restaurants serve modern Irish cuisine with riverside tables perfect for people-watching. The area connects easily to central Dublin via DART rail and the Luas Red Line. Wide pedestrian walkways make exploring on foot a breeze, while business hotels offer river views for travellers seeking Dublin's modern side.

Ballsbridge

Ballsbridge blends upscale charm with sporting excitement just minutes from Dublin's centre. Catch a rugby match at the gleaming Aviva Stadium or explore the elegant embassy district lined with Georgian townhouses. Herbert Park offers leafy paths for a peaceful afternoon stroll, while the RDS Arena hosts everything from horse shows to concerts. The area boasts sophisticated dining with modern Irish cuisine and cosy wine bars worth the splurge. Luxury hotels and historic guesthouses provide premium comfort after a day of exploration. The DART train connects you to city centre in just five minutes, making Ballsbridge the perfect refined base for Dublin adventures.

North Wall

North Wall mixes Dublin's financial muscle with its maritime past along the River Liffey. The gleaming towers of the International Financial Services Centre stand beside the historic Custom House, while cultural venues like the 3Arena and Convention Centre add modern flair. The replica Jeanie Johnston tall ship offers a glimpse into Ireland's famine history, and EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum brings stories of the Irish diaspora to life. Spencer Dock Station and the Mayor Square metro stops make exploring Dublin a breeze from this waterfront district. Business travellers appreciate the upscale dining options during the week, while weekend visitors enjoy quieter strolls along the riverside promenades with their striking architectural contrasts.

Rathmines

Rathmines delivers authentic Dublin living without the tourist crowds or inflated prices. Victorian townhouses with colourful doors line leafy streets where locals gather in traditional pubs for live music sessions. Students and young professionals give the area a lively energy, while the historic town hall and diverse restaurants add cultural flavour to your wanderings. The area boasts budget-friendly dining from cosy gastropubs to international eateries where your wallet won't take a hit. Frequent buses zip you to city centre attractions in just 15 minutes. Most visitors choose charming B&Bs in converted Victorian homes for that genuine Dublin experience.

Dublin and related destinations

A pint of Guinness at its source is practically mandatory, with the Storehouse tour ending at a rooftop bar with panoramic city views. Trinity College houses the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript that makes modern graphic designers weep with inadequacy. St. Stephen's Green offers respite from Dublin's famously changeable weather, which locals discuss with the detailed analysis normally reserved for sports teams. Speaking of which, catch a match at Croke Park where Gaelic football fans demonstrate enthusiasm that makes American sports crowds seem positively sedate. The pubs of Temple Bar overflow with live music, though savvy visitors seek less touristy establishments where musicians play for love rather than tips.

Marlin Hotel Stephens Green

8/10 Good
"Great location, nearby everything you want to see while still being in a quieter area of the city. Staff were helpful and friendly. Our main issue was with the bathroom in our room which was quite dirty. The bathroom door does not stay open so humidity lingers and nothing ever fully dries. This along with there being no shower door led to a concerning amount of black surrounding the shower and throughout the grout on the tile floors. The rest of the room was very clean!"

"Enjoyed our stay here. Rooms were very clean except the bathroom leaks on the floor when taking a shower. Staff were helpful, well stacked bar. Not too much to eat for dinner except pizza. Breakfast was excellent for a small price. Location is great not too far from most of the attractions. I do recommend this place."

"We're in Dublin for 2 nights with family. 1st night checked in late, was given a rather drab room with a dodgy shower. Next morning when mentioned to manager, was moved to a much better room. Full Irish breakfast was great. Parking is available, chargeable at €10 per night."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Dublin

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most budget-friendly time to visit Dublin is during January, February, and December, when hotel prices tend to be lower. For a great value for money experience, it is recommended to stay for at least 2 to 3 days. This allows you to explore the city’s key historical and cultural landmarks, such as museums, monuments, and university sites, as well as enjoy its vibrant sports scene, live music, and entertainment options. With careful planning, visitors can enjoy an enriching experience without overspending.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: To discover last-minute deals to Dublin, head to the DealsOpens in a new window or Last-Minute Deals sections on Hotels.com, where you may find discounted hotel options as your travel date approaches. By enabling email alerts or push notifications from Hotels.com, you could stay informed about flash sales and special promotions, ensuring you don’t overlook potential savings. Moreover, utilise the Smart Shopping tool available via the app to compare hotel prices and amenities, helping you make informed choices. If prices drop or rooms become available, you’ll be the first to know, making it easier to secure a last-minute escape.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices can fluctuate depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates may help you find a more affordable option for your stay in a Dublin hotel. If you're seeking a distinctive experience, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised touch and can sometimes offer better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we’ll inform you whether the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the cost appears to be on the higher side, we can suggest alternative dates that might help you find a more favourable rate.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive, but thanks to Dublin's superb public transport system, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel a bit further out that remains well connected. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative locations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
