Learn more about Bologna

Beneath medieval towers that lean like tipsy professors, Bologna's terracotta skyline glows amber at sunset. The Piazza Maggiore buzzes with students from the world's oldest university, debating philosophy over plates of perfect tortellini. Climb the precarious wooden stairs of Torre Asinelli for views that explain why they call this 'La Rossa.' The city unfolds beneath 40 kilometres of porticoes – now UNESCO-listed – where locals have strolled protected from rain since the Middle Ages. In the Quadrilatero market, vendors offer mortadella with the reverence others reserve for fine art. Don't miss the unfinished façade of San Petronio Basilica or Neptune's fountain, where the sea god's proportions were strategically reduced to avoid offending papal sensibilities.

Art Hotel Commercianti

Art Hotel Commercianti

8/10 Good
"The Art Hotel was very nice, and lived up to its name, with beautiful pieces of art attractively displayed throughout. I would give in 4.5, and not a 5, only because the brewed coffee in the dining room was terrible, and things that should have been hot, were not. That included the scrambled eggs, bacon, side vegetables, and aforementioned coffee and hot water. It was like the food warmers and hot pots were not ever turned on. We were there 4 nights, and it was the same each morning. Other than that, food was excellent, and location couldn't be beat."

On the 15th of August the hotel offered by the pool free sangria, ice cream and water melon (all top quality). There was a huge mall 5 mins walking distance, which was fantastic. 4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Bologna

  1. Book for the cheapest times: For those planning a visit to Bologna, January, February, and August offer budget-friendly travel opportunities, as hotel prices may drop during these months. This period is ideal for travellers on a budget, providing affordable options and great value for money. A stay of at least 2 to 3 days is recommended to explore the city's rich history and culture, with attractions including historical landmarks, museums, monuments, cafes, the university, the cathedral, dining spots, shopping areas, churches, and libraries.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: You may discover attractive deals on Bologna hotels by visiting the DealsOpens in a new window section on Hotels.com. For last-minute savings, explore the Last-Minute Deals area as you could find discounted rates close to your travel date. Additionally, by using the Smart Shopping tool available via the app, travellers are more likely to compare hotel prices and amenities efficiently, ensuring they stay informed of any price drops or available rooms for a spontaneous escape.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may vary depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so being flexible with your dates could help you save on your stay in a Bologna hotel. For travellers seeking distinctive experiences, boutique hotels often offer a more personalised service and may provide better value. When you book with Hotels.com, we’ll inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price is on the higher side, we may suggest more affordable dates to help you find a better deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive, but with Bologna's superb public transport connections, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel located further out that is still well linked. For those keen to explore alternative, less busy neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
